Joy was well named. It was always a joy to see her and have interesting conversations about family and friends. She was optimistic and a pleasure to be with. My sympathy to all her family. I will miss her.

I met Joy in the 1980’s. I have learned much from this wonderful woman.
I cried with her upon the death of her husband…
Shared happiness with her upon the marriage of her son…
Shared wonder upon the birth of her Grandson and I listened as she told us how he has grown to be an amazing young man.
Joy you will be greatly missed and I hope you know how many lives have been made better by having a little more Joy.

Joy, you raised a wonderful son, Larry, who has contributed to my love of life and my spirit through his knowledge and love of music. Thank you. May you rest in peace.

Larry, I cherish the recent memory of catching a glimpse of your Mom at Symphony’s [restaurant] following the Feb 14 concert of the Evanston Symphony. Mom Eckerling was there supporting her adored son, and her adored son was tenderly maneuvering her around the restaurant.
While we have many memories of her attending Evanston Symphony concerts, this memory was particularly special to me, because I was surprised to see her out and about, having had the impression that she was no longer able to get out. And now I suspect this might have been among her last outings to support her son.
It is etched in my mind as a very sweet encounter.

Joy reflected her name in all of her interactions with others, always good-natured, positive and wise. It was my privilege to know her. She was also a wonderful, generous cook! I enjoyed several Thanksgiving dinners at her house through the years and cherished every one!
